Chapter 13

The coffee maker made a gurgling noise and I turned to pour the steaming liquid into our cups. I was putting the lids on when the door opened and Mom came in.

“Jake. It’s wonderful to see you.” Mom sighed. “Well, it would be wonderful to see you under other circumstances. I’m sorry you’re working on such a lovely afternoon.”

“Me too, Mrs. Letouroux. I’d rather be fishing,” he said.

I turned back and handed him his coffee. “I’m taking Jake around to talk to the guests,” I told Mom. “I’ve also got the roster so he can make notes about who is camping where.”

I thought it might be a good idea to check off people as we spoke to them as well. With so many guests, it would be easy to miss one or two.

“I’d love a copy of that roster if you can get me one,” Jake said. “Names, addresses, phone numbers and other contact information would be helpful, as well as when they arrived and where they’re camped.”

Normally I would never give out a guest’s private information, but this was official police business and I wasn’t going to insist Jake go get a warrant. The man had enough to do today without having to write up an affidavit and track down a judge to sign off on it.

“I’ll print out a copy when we’re done,” I told him.

“I’ll do it.” Mom shooed us toward the door. “You both get going. I’ll take care of things here.”

Jake held the door for me and I preceded him out, waiting on the porch for him. We walked in silence side-by-side down the drive to the RV sites.

“I thought we’d start here first,” I told him. “I’m not sure who is in right now and who isn’t, so we’ll mark off the people we talk to on the roster, and you can come back to the others later.”

“I’ve got some business cards we can leave for people who aren’t around,” Jake said. “They can call me and I’ll swing by. It’ll save time if I don’t have to run around trying to track people down for the next few days.”

“Tonight is the camp-cooking potluck,” I reminded him. “Most of the campers planned to be here for it.”

He shook his head. “I wouldn’t feel right disturbing people in the middle of their dinner, especially when we’re not sure the guy just didn’t have a heart attack. Besides, I’ve got horses to feed and tools to clean up. I was doing some barn repairs when the call came in and I left everything laying all over.”

“Well, you’re welcome to come by when you finish your chores. Or tomorrow. Whenever is convenient,” I added awkwardly.

We started at the far end of the RV sites with a woman about my age who’d arrived in a pop-up camper. Shelane White been towing what looked like a small, flat trailer behind a Subaru Outback when Mom and I had checked her in, so I was surprised and impressed to see the pop-up in all its expanded glory.
